There are various visa options that may lead to permanent residency. For parents who may face financial constraints or lengthy processing times associated with contributory or non-contributory parent visas, a Visitor Visa (Temporary) can be a cost-effective alternative for visiting family members in Australia.

Primary Requirements
Parent of an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
The applicant must be the parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident who has spent at least 2 years living in Australia.
Balance of Family Test
You must meet the Balance of Family Test. This generally means that at least half of the applicant's children and step-children are Australian citizens or permanent residents, or more of the applicant's children are settled Australian citizens or permanent residents than in any other single country.
Temporary Parent Visa
If you do not meet the Balance of Family Test, you could consider the Temporary Parent Visa Subclass 870.
Additional Requirements
Additional requirements may apply depending on the Parent Visa you are applying for.
Contributory Aged Parent Visa
The main applicant must be over 66 years of age. If they have a partner younger than 66, the partner may be included as a secondary applicant.
Health and Character
Parents must meet the applicable health and character requirements and may need to undertake a medical assessment, chest X-ray and HIV test. For the non-contributory parent visa pathway, the parent may be required to complete a medical assessment before the visa is granted.
